On 7.-14.10. 2001 1st International Chess Tournament OPEN ZNOJMO 2001 took place in Znojmo (the Czech Republic). This tournament is a part of Series CZECH TOUR 2001/2002 and it is counted in ELO FIDE. 50 players from 13 countries took part in it. There were 19 (38%) participants from the Czech Republic. Other countries represented here are following: Germany 11 players, Sweden 5, Poland 3, Denmark, the Netherlands and Russia upon 2 players, Austria, Finland, Greek, Latvia and Slovakia upon 1 player. Altogether 18 players had ELO FIDE.
Development of this tournament was very tight and the winner was Alfred (England, 2205), who lost only one game in the 5th round with Döring. Great surprise was the second place of Poffers (the Netherlands, national ELO 1919!). Master FIDE Dresen (Germany, 2233) was placed third. After excellent performance was Rosenkilde (Denmark, nat. ELO 2140) fourth, Hala, best from the Czech players, (2275) was placed fifth. Due to the defeat in the last round was Döring (the Czech Republic) sixth. He was at the head of the table for a long time. The biggest favourite international master Volodin (Russia, 2311) was out of luck. He lost last two games and was fourteenth. Best of players from Znojmo was Petlak - 15th place. The youngest participant of the tournament was Kalnins (Latvia, 11 years old) who was seventeenth. The oldest participant was Papapostolou (Greek, 72 years old) and he was twenty-second.
Organizers prepared wine degustation of the firm Znovin Znojmo at the Loucky cloister and social evening with cymbalo music for all players and their accompanying persons. During the whole tournament there was nice weather, so sigthseeing and a visit to the national park Podyji were great experience. Acknowledgements for homelike ambience are aimed at the Dukla hotel, where the tournament took place and most paticipants were accommodated here, otherwise at the arbiter Otto Gutdeutsch from Austria and at organizers Jiri Petruzalek and Dr. Jan Mazuch from AVE-KONTAKT agency in Pardubice.
Organizers are looking forward to the second year and to other tournaments arranged within the frame CZECH TOUR 2001/2002 (1.-8.11. 2001 Pec pod Snezkou, 25.1.-1.2. 2002 Marianske Lazne and 2.-9.2. 2002 Praha).
